Where GRABBZ Fits In Toronto Hip-Hop

Toronto has produced pioneers, global superstars and one of the deepest underground scenes in Canada. GRABBZ represents another part of that story: the independent artist building music and business on his own terms.

The City & The Artist

Toronto Hip-Hop Has Never Been Just One Sound

Toronto’s rap identity has changed dramatically across generations. Long before the city became internationally associated with hip-hop, Canadian artists were already fighting for space on radio, television and stages that often overlooked homegrown rap.

Artists such as Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, Dream Warriors, Saukrates, Choclair and Kardinal Offishall helped establish foundations that later generations could build on.

The global success of Drake, The Weeknd and other Toronto artists changed the outside perception of the city completely. But beneath that international success, Toronto has continued to maintain a deep independent and underground scene.

GRABBZ Represents The Independent Side

GRABBZ doesn’t enter that history by trying to recreate an earlier generation or imitate the sound that made Toronto globally famous.

His lane is rooted in independence.

The music, marketing, visuals, websites, business development and audience-building are being developed as pieces of the same platform.

Toronto gave GRABBZ the environment. Entrepreneurship gave him the mindset. Hip-hop became another way to tell the story.

That difference matters because Toronto’s current rap scene is no longer dependent on a handful of labels or media outlets. Independent artists can now reach listeners directly through streaming, social media, playlists, video platforms and their own websites.

A Catalogue That Doesn’t Stay In One Box

GRABBZ’s records move between different moods.

Free Game leans into lessons and perspective.

I Do This carries confidence and experience.

Toonies Loonies brings a distinctly Canadian identity, while Lighta Lighta pushes toward higher-energy territory.

The point isn’t to force every release into a single Toronto sound. It’s to let the catalogue reflect the person behind it.

Toronto’s Underground Still Matters

Much of Toronto’s hip-hop identity has always developed below mainstream visibility.

Local shows, independent releases, street DVDs, mixtapes, blogs, community radio and now social platforms have all created alternate paths for artists who weren’t immediately embraced by the traditional industry.

That independent infrastructure is why Toronto continues producing artists long after the global spotlight moved toward a small group of recognizable names.
