When people hear the word “Monopoly,” they think of game night, dice rolling, and fake paper money. But where I’m from, Monopoly ain’t just a board game; it’s a metaphor for survival. The same rules that apply when you’re trying to own Boardwalk and Park Place show up every day in the streets. That’s why I made “Free Game” to break it down and give real knowledge to those who think this life ain’t strategic.
Let me explain how the street game and Monopoly are damn near identical move for move.
1. Everyone Starts with a Little, but Not Equally
In Monopoly, everybody gets the same cash at the start. But in the real world? Nah. Some people start with cash, connections, even property. Others start with nothing but ambition. Like I say in “Free Game”:
“Un memento for my niggaz in the ghetto, for the ones who never settle till the reach another level.”
Some folks in the streets are born into struggle, forced to hustle just to break even. Monopoly assumes fairness. The real game? It’s already rigged.
2. Property = Power
The first goal in Monopoly is to grab up property. You land on a block? Buy it. In the streets, it’s the same because if you control territory, you gain leverage. But it’s not just turf; it’s ownership, business, and being the one who sets the price.
Whether it’s real estate or street corners, the one who owns the most controls the flow. The goal ain’t just to survive; it’s to build something that lasts.
3. Pass Go, Collect What’s Yours
In Monopoly, every time you circle the board, you collect $200. In the streets, every time you make it around the block without getting caught up, that’s your “Go.” You earned something. Knowledge. Experience. Maybe a little money. Maybe a scar.
The song “Free Game” came from that cycle. Going around and around until I learned how to break it. I wasn’t just spinning my wheels; I was collecting wisdom.
“Shoulda been ahead in this game, but there’s rule to it..”
4. Jail is Always One Roll Away
Let’s be real, in Monopoly; jail is just part of the game. You land on the wrong square, you go in. In the streets, it’s no different. One bad move, one bad look, and you’re gone.
I know that life. I did five years. That’s why “Free Game” hits hard when I spit:
“They took 5 years, thinking they could have tortured me; but instead of breaking, that shit only contorted me..”
Monopoly lets you roll your way out. Real life don’t. You sit, you reflect, and if you’re lucky, you get a second chance. That’s why I use my second chance to teach the streets.
5. Snakes, Fake Friends, and Strategy
Monopoly turns friends into enemies quick. The second someone starts making moves, the table gets salty. In the streets, same story; the more you win, the more people plot.
I had people smile in my face and flip the second I leveled up. In “Free Game”, I address that head-on:
“Niggaz who could have played their part, still in they feelings. So instead of rekindling the friendship diminished. I let it finish, cause I’m all about my business”
You gotta play smart. Know when to partner up. Know when to walk away. The streets ain’t just about muscle; it’s chess, not checkers.
6. The Goal is Financial Freedom
At the end of Monopoly, the winner owns everything. In real life, that mindset is dangerous if it ain’t paired with purpose. My goal isn’t to own the block; it’s to own my time, my choices, my life.
That’s the message behind “Free Game”; I’m not glorifying the grind. I’m giving you the blueprint to outgrow it.
“The Fuck I look like looking backwards when a nigga moving forward? You ever see anybody jump on the HWY in reverse?”
The Game is Rigged, But Play to Win
You can’t win if you don’t know the rules, and you’ll never win playing someone else’s game. The streets and Monopoly may look different, but both reward strategy, patience, and vision.
I made “Free Game” because too many are still rolling the dice without a plan. My job now? Drop gems so the next player knows how to move smart and maybe even leave the board entirely.
